ABSTRACT

Once mental health policies are passed at the state level, they make their way down to the district level. Some states have greater local control over their implementation efforts, and advocates are encouraged to stay engaged and advocate at the local level. Within a state, not all policies are enacted uniformly across local education agencies. Equity issues often arise and students who need mental health supports the most may not receive them. Similarly, preventative mental health supports that teach protective factors should be taught to all students in a district. These supports are best provided through a multi-tiered system of support. This chapter discusses what local education agencies are and their role in the policy making process. It reviews district level engagement, alignment to state laws, and how to create equitable district level mental health policies. Tips to support access to school-based mental health providers and mental health supports are offered.
