ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how schools can implement effective mental health policies and practices. Whether the policy originates at the school level or is mandated by the state or district, there is opportunity to have a positive impact on student mental health. The role of schools in the policy making process is discussed along with how many policy making decisions are controlled at the school level. Readers are introduced to what mental health services and supports look like at in the school setting. The roles and functions of who can provide what type of support are discussed, as are strategies to recruit and retain professionals. Contextualizing mental health supports within an equity frame of multi-tiered systems of support are also provided. Finally, differentiating mental health supports for students are discussed including universal supports, targeted supports, and intensive services.
