ABSTRACT

Advocacy does not come naturally to most people, and this chapter helps the reader to see that this feeling is okay and expected. One of the beginning feelings that emerges with the first steps of advocacy is a sense of being uncomfortable. It is this sense of discomfort that will lead the reader to see that if it’s comfortable, we may not be growing or making a difference. Related topics explored include asking “why”, taking risks, doing what is needed, determining what level of advocacy is needed, taking risk, advocating individually and collectively, identifying shared goals with stakeholders, and how to move beyond the sense of discomfort to begin obtaining the much-needed mental health supports for students.
