ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the expectations of the married woman in early modern Iberia and examines the lives and work of seven women artists who were married. Encompassing a range of social levels from minor nobility to members of artistic families, the creative practice of these women was significantly affected by the level of support provided by fathers, husbands, and siblings. For some, marriage was a springboard for a prolific artistic life, while for others, it had a very different result.
