ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we look at the use of the arts in conflict transformation. When we are in conflict, it is likely that we will get caught up in an endless loop and are not able to see a way out of it. Often, this is because we reduce the complexity and nuance of every conflict into a simpler black and white scenario. Cognitive rigidity sets in, we see the people involved as right or wrong, and it is very difficult to break out of that rut. Losing the nuance and complexity of ever-unfolding conflicts means we lose the ability to find creative solutions. Conflict transformation needs creativity to break out of that conflict spiraling. We need to find ways to foster thinking that is innovative and outside the box because our old behavioral patterns and mindsets are not working to resolve the conflict. In fact, they are keeping us engaged in conflict. This causes us to filter out any new information that doesn't fit with the paradigm of the conflict story we hold as the one truth. We reject what does not fit our framing of the conflict story.
