ABSTRACT

One of the ways in which youth leaders were able to find resources to support their change efforts was through the municipality's participatory budget or governmental support in general. While that is a good resource and a show of support from local government, it is also limited in its funding and outreach. Therefore, it is imperative that youth leaders develop their own sources of funding. Without a steady stream of funding, too often, despite the need for their services, many youth leader efforts have failed without the resources to sustain them. (We address sustainability issues more fully in Chapter 10.) However, there are some groups that manage to identify ways in which they can self-fund their initiatives through innovative social entrepreneurship. This is less common and why it is so refreshing and unique when it happens and takes hold. We will provide examples of how some of this has been happening from providing graffiti tours, to making award-winning ice-cream, to playing the drums.
