ABSTRACT

Facebook was founded in February 2004 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, by Mark Zuckerberg, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin, and Chris Hughes. Headquartered in Menlo Park, California, it was the sixth-largest company in market capitalization in December 2017, valued at US$ 407 billion. Facebook’s mission is to “give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together”, according to a statement from the company’s annual report. It has important infrastructure and products, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Oculus, a virtual reality technology and content platform. Revenues are growing at a fast pace and, in just four years, went from US$ 7 billion in 2013 to US$ 40 billion in 2017. In that year, the return on revenue was 39%. Except for the payment of dividends to shareholders, which the company does not practice, all other financialization indicators can be found in this company, based on the data presented in this chapter.
