ABSTRACT

Winston’s Churchill’s first radio address as Prime Minister occurred on 10 May 1940 and in it, he says that he has received the commission from the king and has set up an administration of men and women from all parties and nearly all views, that having had differences and quarrels, “we” (using the rhetoric of unity) have a bond to battle till victory, “never to surrender” either to what is servile (“servitude”) and shameful, regardless of cost and pain (“agony”) a brief, direct and effective message. Parliament is the house of discussion and words and represents the people. Churchill gives his rationale: “I considered it in the public interest to suggest that the House should be summoned to meet to-day. Mr. Speaker agreed, and took the necessary steps, in accordance with the powers conferred upon him by the Resolution of the House”.
