ABSTRACT
Via the examination of public health policies regarding secondhand smoke, this chapter discusses the interpretation of scientific data, pointing out that, in practice, all scientific information requires interpretation – no scientific data interprets itself. This means that if we are to understand scientific information, we must first learn how to “convert” knowledge about the model, experiment, or observation in question to knowledge about the part of the actual world that we are attempting to understand.
