ABSTRACT

Specialization is the central issue in the teaching of science. From the point of view of science, one of the attractions of early specialization is that it lets young people get on to research as quickly as possible. They can be given a chance to do something creative and original before hardening of the brain sets in. Another line of argument is that young minds at the age of 15 to 16 want to specialize and that they are ready for it, so that to let them is good in that it lets nature take its proper course, whereas to prevent them is artificial coercion. Within the teaching profession, both at schools and universities, it is the argument from the increase in available knowledge that exerts much of the pressure to specialize. The first and foremost point to make about depth in education is that no one seriously questions the value of it.
