ABSTRACT

Toning kallitype, Vandyke brown, and argyrotype prints provides additional protection from fading and print discoloration. Toning for archival protection occurs by replacing the image silver with noble metal that is inert to the normal environmental conditions experienced by the print. The precious metal toners have distinctive colors replacing the native color of the kallitype, Vandyke brown, or argyrotype image. Selenium toning prints provides protective toning. Some toners that work well on traditional black-and-white paper contain strong bleaches, such as potassium ferricyanide. Argyrotype takes longer to process before toning and uses more distilled water than kallitype or Vandyke prints. Toning prints requires a dedicated print tray for each toner if we use any plastic trays.
