ABSTRACT

Utmost care should be taken when handling, storing, and disposing of photographic chemistry. Silver nitrate is an oxidizer and combines with organics to create a sensitizer that will cause skin burns and will cause blindness if it gets into our eyes. Ferric oxalate solutions age, especially if the cap is loose and oxygen converts it to ferrous. The Vandyke brown and argyrotype processes do not use a developer since they are printing out processes. Fixers are necessary to help remove unexposed silver salts from the print. Sodium sulfite clearing baths allow any remaining silver to be reduced to a form that can be easily washed from the paper.
