ABSTRACT

The Vandyke brown process is a self-masking printing-out process. During development, the print is a beautiful light-roast coffee-brown color. Vandyke brown prints, when properly processed, are stable long-term. The stability can be improved by toning with gold, palladium, platinum, or selenium compounds, which will also change the print coloration. The brush has the advantage of making an artistic statement with brushstrokes around the print. The coating rod has the advantage that less sensitizer can be used than the brush, which absorbs some sensitizer in the bristles. Vandyke brown is a printing-out process when sufficient moisture remains in the sensitized paper. Depending upon the print’s moisture content remaining during exposure, the resulting exposure will have a deep brown printed-out image or a lighter image.
