ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 provides a qualitative examination of consistent participation and party development of long-haul post-rebel parties. The long-term commitment of these parties is shaped by their engagement and experience in electoral politics over the years, given that these parties show great diversity in terms of their organizational history and the institutional settings in which they operate. This chapter provides an analysis of these long-haul parties in relation to the theoretical argument on electoral strategies set out in Chapter 4. These parties have different outcomes in terms of their electoral success and the electoral strategies that they develop. This chapter further extends the argument to a group of “close-call” parties and shows that theoretical argument on the electoral strategies is valid beyond the long-haul parties.
