ABSTRACT

The Working with Boys programme requires teachers to adopt a pedagogical style described as Guided Reflection. Guided Reflection is a non-judgmental, non-didactic teaching style which empowers pupils to take ownership of their learning. The outcomes are co-created by the pupils and the teacher acting as a facilitator. The teacher is perpetually curious about the lives of the pupils. When exploring aspects of pupils’ school experiences, not all pupils will have thought about their relational cultures in any detail before. Guided Reflection and doing Philosophy are similar but not the same because the learning outcomes of a Guided Reflection lesson are more certain. Guided Reflection promotes metacognition; being good at metacognition is not a skill, it’s a habit.
