ABSTRACT

Pornography is wrong on many levels, and whilst some adults hold relatively positive opinions about its effects on their lives, it is entirely wrong for it to be viewed by children. However, pornography is used by some as an aid to masturbation and society does not shame people for masturbating. Whilst schools deliver age-appropriate lessons on pornography, it is important that teachers do not use shame as a tactic. Schools should focus on equipping young people with the knowledge and understanding to make informed decisions in relation to viewing pornography. Whilst the decision to view pornography lies with the individual pupil and their family, schools should require boys to avoid pornographic talk at all costs. It is pornographic talk and sexualised banter that can lead to sexual micro-aggressions (and worse) towards female pupils and staff.
