ABSTRACT

The way relational cultures function is often most obvious in PE⁠ lessons, and that means that PE teachers are uniquely placed to help guide the value systems that underpin gentle masculinity. Boys want to be good at at least one thing and that one thing is often associated with sport in one way or another. That one thing doesn’t have to be a skill or enhanced ability, it can also be a moment of compassion and support for a peer leading to a positive memory. Sport can be a great way for boys to desensitise themselves to the fear of humiliation and PE teachers are uniquely placed to facilitate that.
