ABSTRACT

The topic of banter is core to the programme because by revisiting it frequently, the teacher is delivering opportunities for boys to form the cognitive habit of thinking about banter objectively and analytically. No one can actually stop boys talking inappropriately amongst themselves if they choose to, but people can create the conditions in which they learn the benefits of self-regulation. Problems arise when the banter between boys becomes sexualised. In other words, boys’ humorous exchanges become centred around talking about sex, pornography, girls and women; the language they use is disrespectful and objectifying. The story of Jim and Ms Patel is a good one to recount. Pornographic talk and the over-use of the topic of sex as a way of bonding and creating banter is corrosive, leads to relational cultures that are sour, and can lead to the sexual abuse of girls and women.
