ABSTRACT

From ancient times to the present day, the meaning of democracy has been described in various ways as the liberty of the people, equality of the people, fraternity of the people, or the sovereignty of the people. In the world-wide conflict of ideas and politics which fascism and nazism caused, Nehru’s faith in democracy became greatly strengthened. Political liberty, equality, and progress through peaceful methods — they form Nehru’s basic democratic ideals. Universal franchise becomes the basis of democracy. One of the reasons for Nehru’s faith in parliamentary democracy appears to be the possibility of change and progress under that system. The greatest danger to democracy is war. Among other drawbacks of democracy Nehru finds wastage of time and energy.
