ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an in-depth review of several entry strategies popular with multinational companies: exporting, licensing, strategic alliances, and foreign direct investment. It considers the conditions that suggest the use of each. The chapter reviews entry choices that companies can use to operate in the international marketplace. It also addresses some general strategic considerations that an international manager must consider in selecting an entry strategy. The complexities of choosing an entry strategy that complements the company's multinational strategy or strategies represent significant challenges to international managers. Different circumstances will necessitate different ideal solutions. The chapter discusses the basic diagnostic question for the international manager in selecting what entry strategy best serves the company's strategic objectives for being in a given country or region.
