ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to delineate the motivational determinates of committed action and provide the reader with proven methods for strengthening clients’ readiness, willingness, and ability to act in quest of their well-formed outcomes. To this end, precise methods for recognizing, magnifying, and reinforcing speech that increase goal attainment value and self-confidence are explained and illustrated. Particular attention is given to the role of ambivalence, and readers are taught how to help clients resolve mixed thoughts and feelings about moving forward so that they are ready to take action. As with each chapter, the fluidity of the Foursquare Coaching Framework is illustrated with a demonstration of how to navigate from Support-for-Action to other quadrants within the Framework.
