ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 focuses on the application of copula, which is a word that serves to connect the subjective position with the predicative position. Wang Li first differentiates copula from quasi-copula. Furthermore, he categorizes determinative sentence into three types: (1) determinative sentence formed by simple copula, (2) determinative sentence formed by copula and tertiary and (3) determinative sentence without copula. Also, Wang Li continues the discussion by touching on topics such as the illogical determinative sentence, the flexible use of the copula “是” (shì; be) and how “是” (shì; be) can function as a non-copula.
