ABSTRACT

Wang Li compares the expression of time in Chinese with those in other languages spoken around the world. Aspect in Chinese is then categorized into seven types: (1) common aspect, (2) progressive aspect, (3) perfective aspect, (4) recent aspect, (5) ingressive (or inchoative) aspect, (6) successive aspect and (7) transitory aspect. Wang Li further illustrates the use of aspect in accordance with the seven categories. Also included in this chapter are discussions on the influence of aspect constituent on adjectives, as well as the negative predicate and aspect marker.
