ABSTRACT

Wang Li first defines mood as a way of expressing emotions in language. Then he categorizes mood into twelve types: (1) determinative mood, (2) explanative mood, (3) exaggerative mood, (4) interrogative mood, (5) retorting mood, (6) hypothetical mood, (7) conjectural mood, (8) imperative mood, (9) accelerative mood, (10) compliant mood, (11) indignant mood and (12) persuasive mood. In addition to the illustration of the application of modal particles, Wang Li discusses various topics such as the difference between determinative mood and perfective aspect, the relationship between determinative mood and exclamative mood and the difference between “吗” (ma; MOD) and “呢” (ne; MOD).
