ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 focuses on the modal adverbs that specifically signal the mood types, such as “岂” (qǐ; MADV) and “难道” (nán dào; MADV). Wang Li discusses eight mood types that are indicated by tertiaries: (1) surprised mood, (2) disgruntled mood, (3) understated mood, (4) modulated mood, (5) emphatic mood, (6) argumentative mood, (7) munificent mood and (8) retorting mood. The modal tertiaries are investigated in detail, and the different meanings of such modal tertiary are summarized.
