ABSTRACT

Stage managers of a live performance or event are conductors, implementers, and artists. This chapter outlines how stage managers are responsible for executing a live performance by orchestrating cueing, quantitative and qualitative aspects of time, timing, transitions, and the dynamics of relationships. When stage managers respond to a play, musical, or event, they are in sync with the performers onstage, feeling and breathing with them and orchestrating various events in response to the needs of the people and the process. This chapter considers the stage manager as an orchestrator and discusses different techniques used across diverse genres.
