ABSTRACT

The traditional process is often governed by rules and structures, whereas the non-traditional process is impacted by cultural defaults and practices. This chapter examines the capacity of a stage manager to diagnose the cultural dynamics that frame the process and become critical in shaping the work. Four layers of culture, including interior, discipline, production, and geographic will be named and described. The ability to diagnose culture and identify cultural capabilities as well as how to translate in the face of conflict will be reviewed from the stage manager’s point of view. Readers will review how to build a universal language and grow the collaborative culture that exists across production processes.
