ABSTRACT

The approaches within this book often rely on quality discussions and when this was evident, the impact on learning was the same as that of the lesser able as it was for those more able. Therefore, the approach can be defined as universal – it increases the attainment of all. Therefore, this chapter begins by considering why we need to have an inclusive environment, what one would look like, and how we can ensure that all children meaningfully take part in group/class discussion. We will discuss effective scaffolding that maximises student potential, how to co-create learning goals, how to support children’s understanding of themselves as learners, and some basic information about learning that should be discussed with your learners. This chapter finishes with some ideas on how to lead these general learning discussions.
