ABSTRACT

Why is learning so complex? What do I, as a teacher, need to think about? This chapter aims to make links between theory and practice by introducing some prominent models which have been used to inform practices within the classroom. Reading, being an essential study skill, will be the example used to help make the connections between theory and practice. We will discuss how metacognitive and sociocultural models provide clues that can enhance our understanding of what potentially supports learning within the classroom.
