ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on using the freeze-frame drama strategy to support the teaching of writing in the primary school. Freeze-frames involve a group or groups of children standing in a frozen position to enact a moment from a story or event. Characters' feelings, thoughts and author perspectives can be included. The chapter uses freeze-frames to consider plots, flashbacks, eyewitness accounts and adds different forms of writing to the freeze-frame. Its main use is to slow down the narrative so children can consider key moments, story structures, writing in role, narrative, diaries, letters and reports. This simple strategy is accessible to all teachers including those with limited knowledge and understanding of drama and can be carried out in the classroom without the need for a large space.
