ABSTRACT

This chapter involves the teacher writing letters from characters linked to events in stories and narrative poems, in order to elicit a written response from the children in the form of a letter. They can be used as a stand-alone resource for children to write back either as themselves or in role as the recipients. However, the most effective way to use such letters is to incorporate some drama work, where children engage with the story or take on the roles of the recipients in a more active way. This encourages more imaginative written work with potential to motivate further reading and support recall.

The Key Stage One Examples and Further Suggestions focus on simple stories or extracts to enable the children to concentrate on the writing rather than having to recall complicated events.
