ABSTRACT

This chapter initially provides an overview of China’s digital economy and emphasizes the significance of comprehending it through a digital discourse framework. It then subsequently delves into three interrelated narratives examined in the book. The authors scrutinize the dominant digital discourse in China that has been moulded by digital technologies, facilitating substantial economic, political, and social transformations. This book also offers a comparative analysis of the primary stakeholders involved in shaping digital discourse in China, namely the state, tech corporations, and digital labourers. Additionally, this book exposes the ideological role of digital discourse in shaping Chinese capitalism by identifying three underlying digital ideologies that combine to establish the Internet as an ideology that rationalizes power and production relationships in contemporary China. Finally, this chapter outlines the structure of the book, which includes three parts: the theoretical and contextual section, the empirical section, and the concluding section.
