ABSTRACT

Using social work 50 case examples drawn from life, this book speaks to the development of working alliances, intervention plans, and progress reviews. It is for social workers in child welfare services, children and family services, and community-based social services and is designed for use as textbook or handbook. The book groups case examples by maltreatment type and type of underlying problem. The examples present networks of intertwining problems, as field encounters with actual families do.

The future social worker (or therapist or case manager) reading the variety of case examples here will be introduced to fictional families with whom they may practice applying the assessment strategies and interventions they are learning. Also provided are a planning worksheet and a self-monitoring log with instructions, reflecting best practices for collaborating with clients to make intervention plans and review progress. Whether the setting is child welfare, children and family, or community-based services, the flexible tools introduced in this book can be powerful, especially when reinforced by the recommended emphasis on working alliance and the strength perspective. These tools will reliably start clients on the move toward desirable outcomes.
