ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 includes 17 case examples with families who decided themselves to seek help from children and family outpatient services or who were referred for help by a school or agency. Eight of the 17 involve symptoms of mental disorder manifesting in a family member. Seven more involve other family problems: intimate partner violence, parent–teen conflict, sibling rivalry, teen pregnancy, and chronic illness. The remaining case examples focus on homicidal ideation and school violence. Again here, examples tend to escape categories while depicting the networks of intertwining problems and circumstances that challenge families, including poor health/mental health, marital difficulties, substance use, and financial woes.
