ABSTRACT

Reliability and subjectivity are core concepts attached to both quantitative and qualitative research. This chapter begins by providing detailed insights into how these concepts fit into both quantitative and qualitative research. Specifically, intercoder and measurement reliability are both addressed. Further, the core subtypes of measurement reliability (item-total; parallel forms; split halves; test-retest; and Cronbach’s alpha) are discussed in detail. Finally, the concept of subjectivity is discussed, giving opportunity for consideration of core qualitative approaches to this, including standpoint theory, reflexivity, grounded theory, and the constant comparative technique.
