ABSTRACT
Ethical guidelines in research help practitioners understand how to operate in an ethical and appropriate manner and to put the quest for knowledge in context. As such, ethics in research pushes researchers to consider the participants in their research when making decisions, to value the contributions of other researchers, and to include honesty and integrity as valued goals in the research process. This chapter considers a number of those concepts in further detail, providing researchers an understanding of core ethical principles that govern modern research (i.e., avoid harm, voluntary participation, informed consent, and privacy/confidentiality) while also developing a broader understanding of the value of ethical principles in research and drawing upon key historical examples.
