ABSTRACT

Chapter 4: Acceptance and Commitment Strategies for Individual Work. This chapter describes ACT techniques, particularly as they intersect with mindfulness strategies, that can be used when providing individual intervention (a Tier 3 intervention). The six key areas central to ACT are explored: being present, acceptance, cognitive defusion, self-as-context, values, and committed action. Taken together, these core ACT processes contribute to an individual’s ability to increase their psychological flexibility, which is the ability to be in the present moment, with full awareness and openness to the experience, and a commitment to engage in behaviors aligned with one’s values. Strategies and tools are offered for use when working with youth on each of these processes. Practical handouts, scripts, and case examples are offered in this chapter.
