ABSTRACT

A collection of writings on a variety of topics, gathered together from the periodicals or the volumes of papers by divers hands in which they first appeared, must have some connecting link. I have always found in reading such books that the strongest and most basic, most evident connecting link is, in fact, the person of the author; hence, perhaps a few remarks on how the pieces in this volume hang together might be justified, even in what otherwise should be regarded as a fairly serious book on a number of serious topics.
