ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors build on these foundations to consider how the issues of sustainability can be considered by THE organizations and incorporated into a ‘sustainability strategy’ as part of the organization's overall strategy. Organizations and destinations have faced increasing pressures in recent years (exerted by stakeholder groups) to be more active in their approaches to the sustainability of the natural environment and to consider their social role in society. The chapter first discusses the meaning of sustainability and its application to businesses, before going on to consider the distinction between sustainable strategy and sustainable competitive advantage. Finally, the chapter considers which aspects should be considered by a sustainability strategy, with examples from THE.
