ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the situations and experiences of women in senior academic careers. The chapter begins with the review of literature, arguing on the different aspects of academic work for senior women and men. The author discusses the existence of homophily that contributes to the fewer women in senior positions. Also presented are the specific barriers that women professors face, for example the “think professor–think male” bias, bullying, and the expectation of women to take on roles that are often less rewarded. Moreover, this chapter presents literature that argues that women at senior positions are more likely, compared to men, to report feeling overwhelmed and burned out.

The review of literature is followed by the presentation of experiences of women in the CEE region. Senior women shared that they worked very hard throughout their careers and received no support from others. This resulted in the feeling of that, although they have the means, they are reluctant to support other women.
