ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the research aspect of academic careers. It begins with the review of literature, arguing the growing importance of research across CEE institutions, including publishing in international and indexed journals and participation in international research groups and conferences. The author argues of the existence of gender inequalities in this supposedly objective part of academic work. The literature showcases that women are more likely to be excluded as authors of papers compared to men. Articles written by women take longer in review and receive fewer citations. The review of literature is followed by the presentation of the experiences of women in the CEE region in the context of the research portion of their work. Women emphasize the lack of resources to conduct research on the level expected by the institutions. These include lack of financial resources, administrative support, and lack of social capital to work in international teams.
