ABSTRACT

This chapter presents administrative and service work as part of academic obligations. It begins with the review of literature showcasing the gendered nature of this type of work. Previous studies found that women often dominate among the academics with administrative obligations; however, this is not reflected in the possibilities in the promotion to leadership positions. The author argues that along with the spread of new public management across the region, the administrative obligations also grew. The review of literature is followed by the presentation of the experiences of women performing administrative obligations. The study clearly shows how administrative work is seen as the “natural” domain of a women, while at the same time, this type of work is often unappreciated and not rewarded.
