ABSTRACT

This chapter offers an overview of the invisible work performed in academia. It showcases that the invisible work is found throughout all academic work obligations, such as teaching, administration, and research. It also presents the gendered aspects of invisible work. This type of work is performed on daily basis by academics, but remains a blind spot for the institution, not recognized nor rewarded. Invisible work has a negative impact on work-life balance and pulls academics away from work that is rewarded and acknowledged. This also results in increasing frustration and stress for academics.
