ABSTRACT

This chapter is to present a broader context of the situation of women in higher education in the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region. It starts with a presentation of the background and historical legacy of the region, including the change in the higher education sector after the Soviet era. Further, it draws on the more recent situation of higher education in the region, including the increasing trends of new public management and marketization of the sector and a focus on performativity. Finally, the chapter presents the situation of women in higher education by discussing the gendered aspects of employment in the sector, career development and participation in the decision-making, and the glass ceiling.
