ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the review of literature on the topic of women in higher organizations. The concept of the gendered organization is presented as a theoretical background of the review. Further, the author argues that academia is also a gendered organization, where masculinity is played out in various aspects and levels. The chapter offers a plethora of examples of the barriers and challenges that women face throughout their academic careers, from gendered selection to gendered promotion. The author argues that one of the causes of this situation come from the gender-based biases and stereotypes that are common throughout CEE countries. This chapter also presents the existence of sexism and harassment in academia from colleagues, students, and supervisors.
