ABSTRACT

This chapter starts with the definition of Standard and Recommended Practices (SARPs), its objectives, and how these are developed by the ICAO, including the role of CAAs and the process of improvement to SARPs. A table of relevant SARPs for airport planning is included in the chapter with brief requirements.

Airport planning compliance with the limitations imposed by various volumes of space in and around the airport is called ‘Obstacle Limitation Surfaces’ (OLS). OLS is one of the most important aspects of airport planning. The OLS, with reference to the Category of operations, is also briefed. OLS is described with examples to assess the objects for their acceptability or otherwise. This chapter also covers the impacts of objects protruding the surfaces and mitigating measures. An example of a zoning map around an airport is briefed with an illustration.
