ABSTRACT

The introduction provides an overview of the theoretical and empirical coverage in the book. The book has three parts. Part I puts forward a conceptual framework for the analysis of expertise and experts in contemporary societies. This is based on a review of relevant contributions from Science and Technology Studies (STS), the sociology of the professions, political psychology, economics, and political science. Part II examines several empirical cases in the light of the conceptual framework. Part III discusses the consequences and implications for society. The introduction briefly outlines the main argument of the book, and positions itself vis-à-vis other notable positions. In this book, I will put forward elements for a theory of expertise that provides a conceptual framework and shows some empirical applications. In order to understand expertise, and the role of experts in contemporary society, conceptual clarifications are vital. Of equal importance is the explanatory power of any conceptual framework. The book will thus also discuss empirical cases of experts and expertise.
