ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Roger Koppl's book Expert Failure. He presents an economic analysis of experts, which is based on F.A. Hayek, but also on Mandeville, Alfred Schutz, and Berger and Luckmann's The Social Construction of Reality. Koppl is scpetical about interventions by state authorities, based on professional expertise. In his view, it is preferable that citizens take their own individual decisions, based on accurate information. This looks very similar to approaches related to citizen science, or lay expertise. But it is not that simple.
