ABSTRACT

At the point of writing this book, Malaysia just concluded its 15th General Election. The results show a country divided along ethnic lines. An electoral map showing how Malaysians voted indicates such stark voters’ preference. The election saw a hung parliament – the first time in Malaysian history – after both the PH and PN coalitions failed to win enough seats to form the next government. The few days after the election saw rounds of political bargaining. The 2022 general election further dashed any hope Malaysians have of a new chapter in Malaysian politics. Many held such a hope in 2018 after the country experienced its first electoral turnover that saw the end of the Barisan Nasional’s 61-year rule. The “new Malaysia” that many heralded did not materialise.
