ABSTRACT

What did migrant people experience and witness? How did they feel about what they were experiencing? How did they make sense of their experiences? Studying the private lives, usually secreted behind closed doors, is particularly important in order to better understand the experiences and emotions of “people without history.” Such study cannot be easy, given the modest number of testimonials, reflections, and memoirs of the era’s protagonists, and the additional difficulties associated with proper evaluation of such confessional materials.
